#1 · Michael Misa | 6'0", 185 lbs · Saginaw Spirit (OHL) - Misa scored 62 goals tied for the most ever in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Patrick Kane for draft-eligible players. That's impressive!! I'm going with Misa first overall because there's a significant chance of Chicago Blackhawks winning the lottery and they are stacked on defensive prospects. Bedsy needs a world-class centerman if he stays on the wing or to have a 1-2 punch down the middle. Sabres with Dahlin/Power (both #1s of the past) have both signed long-term! Philly needs a center to pair with Michkov, Boston lost Bergeron/Krejčí/Coyle and will for sure need a future 1C. Seattle & Columbus need offense also and would likely pick Misa if they win the lottery. San Jose grabbed Celly 1st overall last-year, but still needs offense so there is a case for Misa at #1 for them to have a 1-2 punch of Celly/Misa & Will Smith on the wing. |
#2 · Matthew Schaefer | 6'2", 183 lbs · Erie Otters (OHL) - all year long, the consensus #1 pick BPA (best player available) has been Matthew Schaefer, until the stats piled up for Misa at year end, he potentially passed him in the conversation.. I think with an upper body injury it will not hinder his excellent skating/mobility.. but this player hasn't played all year and will need at least 2 years to make a significant impact in the NHL. Misa can join a team next year and make an immediate impact! *N.B.* if Sharks, Nashville, Ducks or Pittsburgh land the first overall pick, they all *likely* take Schaeffer at #1. I could see Pittsburgh going either way with Misa or Schaeffer at first overall, because Crosby/Malkin & Karlsson are in their golden years. I wouldn't be surprised to see San Jose Sharks take Misa over Schaefer at #1, as they have plenty of offensively-gifted LHD in their prospect pool including Sam Dickinson & Luca Cagnoni. San Jose picks Schaefer at #2 if Chicago (or another team takes Misa #1) that's a no-brainer! |
#3 · Porter Martone | 6'3", 196 lbs · Brampton Steelheads (OHL) - as the captain of his team, he's a big body with decent hands & wheels for a big man. I personally saw him in Sudbury and he scored a goal slapping a mid-air "baseball hit" to the top corner! The thing I liked most was his demeanor, he doesn't get involved in chippy small stuff (has thick skin) and can take some punishment/cross-checks without retaliating but he waits for his moment to make a big hit and will stand up for a teammate if the timing is right. Board-battles, puck retrievals and corner play are best in class! |
#4 · James Hagens | 5'11", 178 lbs · BC Eagles (NCAA) - coming into this year James led the pack, and has slipped in many central rankings. He's got 2-way 200ft player potential in the NHL like a Jack Hughes or Macklin Celebrini and I think there's a world where he goes #3 ahead of Martone based on the team that's there, as explained in my #1/#2 picks, since all four of these players are "close" with Schaeffer as a far & away #1 is now an "unknown" (after his WJC injury). |
#5 · Anton Frondell | 6'0", 196 lbs · Djurgårdens IF (HA) - heavy centerman that is the most NHL-ready player in the Swedish hockey system. |
#6 · Roger McQueen | 6'5", 192 lbs · Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL) - big "farm boy" power forward from Saskatchewan that could go as high as #3/4, reminds me of Beckett Sennecke from last year. You can't teach size, and he's huge! |
#7 · Victor Eklund | 5'11", 161 lbs · Djurgårdens IF (HA) - hard-nosed right shot winger like a Travis Konecny, or Seth Jarvis. His brother William Eklund plays for the San Jose Sharks. |
#1 · Macklin Celebrini | 6'0", 197 lbs, Boston University (BU) - NCAA, consensus first (1st) overall pick, like Bedsy (Connor Bedard) was last year; "Celly" was the youngest player ever to win the Hobey Baker! |
#2 · Artyom Levshunov | 6'2", 205 lbs, right shot D-man who plays like a Brent Burns |
#3 · Cayden Lidstrom | 6'3", 213 lbs, big strong two-way center, like a Roope Hintz |
#4 · Ivan Demidov | 5'11", 168 lbs, dirty dangles, skilled winger in 2nd Russian league (MHL) some project hands like Nikita Kucherov |
#5 · Tij Iginla | 6'0", 191 lbs, elite scorer, skilled backchecking forward, legacy pick - Jarome/Iggy is his father |
#6 · Sam Dickinson | 6'3", 203 lbs, rangey and smooth skating defender mature beyond his years |
#7 · Zeev Buium | 6'0", 186 lbs, slick puck moving defenseman with upside like a Morgan Rielly, or Miro Heiskanen |
#8 · Cole Eiserman | 6'0", 197 lbs, winger with a great release/shot, high potential goal scorer |
#9 · Zayne Parekh | 6'0", 178 lbs, Saginaw Spirit (OHL), RHD, similar to an Erik Karlsson or Axel Sandin-Pellikka (selected last year by the Red Wings) |
#10 · Konsta Helenius | 5'11", 189 lbs, one of the best Finnish/European skaters in this draft class |
#11 · Anton Silayev | 6'7", 207 lbs, giant skater LHD comparable to Zdeno Chara, or with a ceiling of a Victor Hedman |
#12 · Carter Yakemchuk | 6'3", 202 lbs, big offensively gifted RHD with hitting like a Tom Wilson, Radko Gudas |
#13 · Berkly Catton | 5'10", 175 lbs, small but elite offensive playmaker |
#14 · Michael Brandsegg-Nygård | 6'1", 207 lbs, tough hard-nosed winger, shined in Norwegian national team play |
#15 · Beckett Sennecke | 6'2", 181 lbs, strong right-handed winger, crafty hands who plays similar to a Tage Thompson |
#16 · Adam Jiříček | 6'3", 178 lbs, top defenseman who was projected to go higher but had injury issues |
#17 · Liam Greentree | 6'3", 215 lbs, big/solid playmaking winger with high hockey IQ, nose for positioning around the net |
#18 · Ryder Ritchie | 6'0", 177 lbs, smart/intelligent/good kid, great shot release, high scoring potential |
#19 · Igor Chernyshov | 6'2", 196 lbs, shifty right-handed winger playing in the KHL for the HC Dynamo Moscow |
#20 · Cole Hutson | 5'10", 159 lbs, smaller-sized creative LHD, legacy pick, his brother Lane Hutson was drafted in 2022 by the Montréal Canadiens |
